Holm Auto Good News: Fair vendor serving funnel cakes to support Kansas Food Bank - Salina Journal

Though the coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of fairs across the country, one Kansas company is bringing a favorite aspect — sweet food — to cities in the state, including Salina this week, and helping to feed people in the process. Every day from noon to 10 p.m., Ottaway Amusement Co., which has been the carnival provider at the Tri-Rivers Fair for years, is at the Mid State Plaza parking lot, 2450 S. Ninth St., serving sweet fair foods, including funnel cake. Part of the proceeds from sales will support the Kansas Food Bank, which serves over 700 hunger-relief partners in 85 Kansas counties, including in Saline County. Ottaway has been serving food across the state, beginning in its home of Wichita, since July and has raised over $52,000 for the food bank. Owner Danny Ottaway said the company provides carnival rides at several fairs, but when the pandemic hit, the fair business took a hit as well. "Due to COVID, there’s no carnivals," Ottaway said. Salin...

OPINION | FRONT BURNER: Enjoy a fair favorite at home with this easy funnel cake recipe - Arkansas Online

Image
My first funnel cake memory isn't of strolling the Midway at the Arkansas State Fair — it's eagerly waiting while my mother (and maybe one of my aunts) stood over a pot of bubbling oil frying and draining the crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside confections as quickly as my dad, brother, cousins and I could eat them. I'm positive it wasn't my first time eating a funnel cake because I remember thinking how cool it was that we needn't wait all year for the fair or another festival to take place to enjoy the delicious sugary fried treats. And of all the many scrumptious treats available at the fair — smoked turkey legs; foot-long corndogs; giant pretzels; perfectly seasoned, whole-spiral cut fried potatoes; deep-fried Snickers; cotton candy; candied and caramel apples to scratch the surface — funnel cakes are still my favorite. If not for the pandemic, the Arkansas State Fair would be Oct. 16-25. But not this year. Maybe next year — if we all do our part to co...

Image
CLOSE A packing list for those planning to go to the Arizona State Fair drive-thru food event: water, a car with functioning air conditioning, a full tank of gas and patience. This event is not for those who only sort of like carnival goodies. You need to really be committed to your love of pizza, funnel cake and corn dogs for the wait for be worth it.  On day one of the Arizona State Fair drive-thru food event, people were ready and waiting at the fairgrounds when the gates opened at noon. Any illusions that this event would not be completely packed were immediately shattered when I arrived at 12:15 p.m. The line of cars snaked around the parking lot and stretched all the way to the entry point on Monte Vista Road and 19th Avenue. Around 12:30 p.m., a passenger in the vehicle in front of me jumped out of the car, exasperated, likely realizing she was in for a long, sweaty wait in the midday sun. After a few minutes, a state fair e...

Funnel Cake - Hackaday

Image
As far as the hacker’s toolbox goes, the 3D printer is way up there in terms of utility. Sure, it takes time to learn the ins and outs of designing, slicing, and extruding, but after that, the world is pretty much your additive oyster. Follow those design dreams, or use it to replace the things that break. The icing on the cake? You can chase those dreams into other materials, because 3D prints can be used to cast metal. [RetroTech Journal] wanted to fry up some rosette cookies, a Scandinavian delight from his youth that look a lot like fancy, personal funnel cakes. They’re made with special aluminium irons that shape the dough while it fries, as opposed to the jumbled chaos that is funnel cake. Rosette irons come in a few traditional shapes, but once you get tired of those, it’s up to you to cast them in aluminium. And how would you go about doing that? By creating a firmly-packed sand mold using a mounted 3D print. In the endlessly entertaining video after the break, [RetroTech Jo...

Image
May 3, 2020, 2:08 PM · When the nation's theme parks closed in March, the first thing we did here at Theme Park Insider to help keep the theme park magic alive was head into the kitchen. If you missed it the first time around, check out our Social Distancing Kitchen show on YouTube, where we showed you how to make several popular theme park food items, including Disneyland's Monte Cristo sandwich and Silver Dollar City's Skillet Dinners. Now many parks are putting their chefs and food managers online (who, unlike me, actually know what they're doing in a kitchen) to show you how to make even more theme park snacks. Let's start with the all-time classic funnel cake, this time served with a decadent Bananas Foster sauce, courtesy California's Great America. Lloyd 'Pete' Waters: Morels, grape jelly and funnel cakes - Herald-Mail Media

You know, the older I get, the more I yearn for the simple things in life. Take spring, for instance. I’ve sure been blessed over my years while growing up in a good home, with some good times, and about the best friends a man could have in the best town around. Dargan was something very special to me with my grandparents Reno and Gen, and those neighbors were about the best any kid could have. This time of year is always one of my favorites. When spring arrived in my youth, a sturdy stick, a big brown bag and maybe a sandwich would be gathered for my trip to the deep woods in search of noble, earthly standing little fungus statues known as morels. Perhaps there is something quite miraculous about the tiny spores of this mysterious little creation. It’s a delicacy fit for royalty that is practically indescribable unless you have found a few, dipped them in a beaten egg with a dusting of flour and placed them gently in a skillet for a quick swim in some hot b...
