Holy cannoli: Celebrating National Dessert Day - Reminder Publications

Image
WESTERN MASS. – National Dessert Day took place on Oct. 14, and if you’ve gathered anything about the news staff over at Reminder Publishing , you know that we love to write features on local businesses and all of the delicious foods they have to offer. For a few months now the news staff has been itching for the opportunity to eat cannoli and write about it. It all started when Managing Editor G. Michael Dobbs traveled to Russo Bakery in Enfield, CT. Mike sent our news team group chat a photo of an incredibly appetizing looking cannoli that he picked up from the location – which boasts over 30 flavors on their website. Instantly we asked each other, “When is National Cannoli?Day?”?hoping for the opportunity to exploit the holiday for our own desires to eat the delectable pastries for work. Well – we missed it. National Cannoli Day took place on June 16. We were many weeks too late. However Staff Writer Dennis Hackett ingeniously asked, “But when is National Dessert Day?” Ding ding ...

Mannino's Cannoli Express: A family recipe hits the streets of New Jersey - WPVI-TV

Image
FAIR LAWN, New Jersey -- Gabriella Mannino Tomasello, the owner of Mannino's Cannoli Express, has taken her decade-long family tradition of cannoli making to the streets of New Jersey. For Gabriella, the famous Italian dessert is more than just a business-it's a connection to her Italian roots. "Mannino's is known for our cannoli. Not only do we do the traditional vanilla and chocolate chip; but what makes us different is that we offer seasonal flavors such as caramel, pumpkin, and mint chocolate chip," said Gabriella. Her passion and appreciation for the culinary arts began at a very young age. Related: This cereal-infused ice cream is giving people a taste of nostalgia! Working hand in hand with her father, Vito Mannino, Gabriella learned the authentic Italian recipes that would eventually launch her own business in 2014. "We are licensed in New York, Delaware, Philadelphia as well as New Jersey; so we are able to go wherever we want," said Gabri...

As coronavirus cases in O.C. rise, Huntington Beach restaurant continues anti-mask stance with L.A. billboard - Los Angeles Times

Image
With Orange County staying in the red tier for at least two more weeks and Los Angeles County still in the initial purple tier, the coronavirus pandemic remains a major factor in residents’ dining out habits. But in spite of a rising death toll from COVID-19 in the county, one Huntington Beach restaurant has had no qualms expressing an anti-mask position since the early days of the pandemic. Basilico’s Pasta e Vino recently continued that stance, putting up a large billboard inspired by “The Godfather” movies in Los Angeles near the Beverly Center. The billboard on La Cienega Boulevard reads, “Leave the mask, take the cannoli,” a play on the Godfather films and the line “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.” It shows the well-known puppeteer’s hand, uses the familiar font from the films and directs viewers to the restaurant’s Instagram page. Basilico’s owner Tony Roman said Wednesday in an email interview that he felt the state shutdown was unjustified and un-American. He said the Los...

I Adopted My Dog Cannoli From Overseas. It's Easier Than You Think. - The Daily Beast

Image
“My dog is trilingual!” is my favorite joke to make when people meet my new rescue pup, Cannoli. Technically, he only speaks “dog” fluently, but as a Korean-born dog that literally flew to America to be with me, I assume he understands a little bit of both of those human languages, too.  I always knew I would get a dog of my own eventually and walked a ton of them in 2019 for extra cash and snuggles. I even fostered an adorable senior Shih Tzu from the ASPCA in New York City where I live. But I never thought I would have a dog that spoke more languages than I did, or that they would originate from a country I’ve never stepped foot in. Yet on August 25, 2020, a friend and I drove to John F. Kennedy airport to pick up a Terrier-mix mutt that would soon be mine–all the way from Seoul, South Korea. For weeks I tried to find a dog in the tri-state area that matched my criteria, to no avail. I followed almost every local animal rescue I could find on social media and relentlessly sw...

Oreo responds to 7-Eleven's Oreo taquito cannoli - Mashed

Image
While there seems to be no clear reason for such a cruel play on everyone's emotions, there's a very slim chance you might still get to sample this Oreo creation. The original post's caption read, "Behold the taquito cannoli. (It's not real, but it'd be totally cool if it was) Wink wink nudge nudge twist twist dunk dunk." The caption also tagged Oreo as it lay in wait for a reply. When Oreo saw the post, the cookie company commented, "711 billion likes and it's a deal." That's basically impossible given the entire population of the world doesn't even add up to that, but still. Snack fans can hope. Later, Oreo even reposted the photo tagging 7-Eleven and captioned the shared image with, "we aren't even mad at this," (via The Takeout ). Let's hope the evil masterminds at 7-Eleven keep any other genius unreal collab snack ideas to themselves. In the meantime, let's hope Oreo sees the payoff on this fake taquito c...

How a writer learned to open up about Dad's secret sex books - Los Angeles Times

Image
The title of Sara Faith Alterman’s memoir , “Let’s Never Talk About This Again,” is both perfectly on point and totally ironic. Alterman’s story revolves around her family’s inability to discuss anything even remotely uncomfortable, especially having to do with sex — which became a problem when the young Sara, reaching for her “Sesame Street Cookbook,” discovered a stash of novelty sex books written by her father, Ira. They were largely softer-than-soft core, with an emphasis on naughty humor. “Games You Can Play With Your Pussy” had a silly cat on the cover; at first, Sara didn’t realize it was even sexual. Others, like “Bridget’s Sexual Fantasies,” were more explicit, including nude photos and chapters on bondage, orgies and oral sex. By the time she was in seventh grade, Alterman knew exactly what “cannoli,” “weenie” and “lollipop” meant when they were in a book by her father. Alterman, now 40, gradually overcame her family’s culture of reticence, becoming a comedy writer and per...

Cannoli brand expands into own factory - Food & Drink Business

Image
The Cannoleria brand, developed by Melbourne-based cheese manufacturer That’s Amore Cheese, has expanded to its own independent factory and head office in Heidelberg West. Launched in 2018, Cannoleria is a cannoli produced with That’s Amore Cheese Ricotta, and due to the brand's popularity, it has outgrown its space within the That’s Amore Cheese factory. “Being part of the That’s Amore family is fantastic, but it was time for Cannoleria to set up in its own factory that could facilitate further growth,” said Cannoleria co-founder Dario Di Clerico. “Our new location in Heidelberg West is perfect for us to be able to produce more cannoli, experiment with more flavours and expand the business. The Heidelberg West factory is 500 square metres and currently we work 200 of wheels of ricotta a day. “For the Cannoleria team, it is important that we always strive to make the very best cannoli. Using only natural ingredients and no artificial colourings or preservatives, we create an e...

'Holy Cannoli': How Wall Street Left Loggers Reeling - Newser

Image
(Newser) – Drive outside Falls City, Oregon, and you'll see it: a lot of Douglas fir trees cut down to stumps. That image opens a ProPublica story about how Oregon—America's top lumber-producing state—allowed private timber companies to buy up land and suffered economically as a result. "You're left still with these companies that have reaped these benefits, but those small cities that have supported them over the years are left in the dust," says a Falls City official. It goes back to the 1990s, when the feds drastically reduced logging in national forests to protect the northern spotted owl. Wall Street investment funds and real estate trusts then snapped up private forestlands, in theory rescuing out-of-work loggers. But Weyerhaeuser, Oregon's biggest such company, has severely cut its workforce while automating and consolidating jobs. A range of similar companies have also cost Oregon $3 billion or more in timber tax cuts, forcing politicians to hoist ...

Leave The Gun, Take The Cannoli: 10 Of The Best Quotes From The Godfather - Screen Rant

The Godfather is one of the best movies ever made in the history of cinema, and is also one of the few literary adaptations which stood up to, and even exceeded, the expectations of viewers and critics. Marlon Brando’s career-best performance as Don Corleone was conceived by Francis Ford Coppola as a nuanced, principled mafia lord who is not needlessly ruthless and, in fact, is more conscientious than most gangsters, especially as traditionally depicted in the media. RELATED: The Godfather: 10 Burning Questions We Are Still Asking Today The 1972 films also featured some of the most memorable lines in Hollywood; some of these quotes have been written down by Mario Puzo in his novels, but some of the great dialogue in The Godfather  was actually improvised. Lines like “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” or “Revenge is a dish best served cold," are hugely publicized. But there are some other stunning quotes from The Godfather which really need to be talke...
