AbstraitL Opuntia humifusa rod (OHST) contains high levels of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, flavonoids, polyphenols, which may be useful in treating diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that the consumption of the HST regulates glucose levels in the blood and lipid-lowering responses in rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin. Forty Sprague-Dawley rats (6 weeks old) were assigned to 5 groups: normal control rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (DM), DM treated with OHST 150 mg / kg per day, DM treated with 250 OHST mg / kg per day, and with DM OHST 500 mg / kg per day. OHST powder was suspended in distilled water and administered orally by the probe to be administered once daily. After 7 weeks of treatment, fasting glucose and triglycerides in the blood HST groups were significantly lower compared with the DM group (P <.05). Treatment by the Ontario HST has also a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol causes (p <.05). Reduce both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were associated with a significant increase in serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (P <0.05). In addition, concentrations of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase significantly lower in the groups OHST in the DM group (P <.05). In addition, a significant increase in cell volume on pancreatic beta in rats with 500 mg / kg OHST was treated versus untreated rats DM (P <0.05) was observed. The overall results show that OHST has a potential hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activity in diabetic rats by streptozotocine.Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
