Recipes From My Travels – Pork Loin with chorizo and tomato topping - Bromsgrove Standard Recipes From My Travels – Pork Loin with chorizo and tomato topping - Bromsgrove Standard Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:29 AM PST CHEF and blogger Paul James writes for our paper. HAVING been to Magaluf a few years ago I didn't really get to sample what cuisine Majorca had to offer, pity really. The island itself is beautiful and the capital Palma, with its cathedral towering above the millionaires yachts bobbing up and down in the harbour is a truly magnificent sight to behold. The island has so many beautiful places to visit. The Sobrassada, a traditional local Majorcan cured meat is the main ingredient in this dish, unfortunately I couldn't get hold of it this time but I recreated the same dish using the next closest thing – Chorizo cooked down and blended with fresh tomatoes. It looks a very simple dish, which it is but the great thing abo...

VFW hosts takeout dinner in Lackawanna County - WNEP Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Image
"Piggies" sell out again at the fundraiser. BLAKELY, Pa. — A VFW in part of Lackawanna County hosted a dinner fundraiser Sunday afternoon. The Shopa Davey VFW Post 6082 dished up pigs in the blanket at the spot along Electric Street in Blakely. They sold 500 take-out dinners for 11 dollars each at the fundraiser, complete with mashed potatoes and corn. Volunteers say it takes days to prepare all the food but all the hard work is worth it in the end. "The community has been fantastic! We do a lot for the community and they do a lot for us! and we can't thank them enough. Without them, we wouldn't survive," said VFW POST 6082 Commander, Peter Puhalla Sr. Organizers say the community has been even more supportive than usual throughout the pandemic, selling out the last three events here in Lackawanna County.

Experts explain how to avoid arguments over where to get dinner together - yoursun.com

The next time someone asks you where you want to go for dinner, state a clear preference. And if you’re inviting someone out, tell your friend that you don’t like deciding. These are two of the main takeaways from a recent study we conducted on how people make joint decisions, offering ways to avoid the indecision and annoyance that can follow questions intended to solicit someone else’s opinion on what to do together. TYPICAL EXCHANGES We’ve all experienced this sort of exchange in our lives, in which we ask someone else, “What do you want to do?” It could be about food, an evening activity or pretty much any other shared activity. Shutterstock PHOTOS We’ve all experienced this sort of exchange in our lives, in which we ask someone else, “What do you want to do?” It could be about food, an evening activity or pretty much any other shared activity. These Recipes Are So Smart - The New York Times These Recipes Are So Smart - The New York Times Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:00 AM PST Hello and welcome to Five Weeknight Dishes, a newsletter for busy people who still want something good to eat. As a home cook and an editor, I love and seek out recipes that are animated by a great idea: a clever technique, a sharp shortcut that defies conventional wisdom, a magic combination of flavors or textures, or an ingredient moonlighting in a new context. Those are the recipes I try to give you in every newsletter, and this week's is really chock-full of them. Cacio e pepe — but made with farro, and using a technique that is easier than the classic. Chicken adobo — but made with cauliflower, which also turns it vegan. On another note, last week I asked how the weather was where you are, and what you're cooking, as food and weather are inherently entwined. It was wonderful and fascinating to re...

What to Cook This Weekend - The New York Times

What to Cook This Weekend - The New York Times What to Cook This Weekend - The New York Times Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:49 AM PST Good morning. Purim ends this evening. The holiday celebrates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, a high official in the Persian court who sought their extinction in the fifth century B.C., but whose plans were foiled by the queen, Esther. It's a time of feasting and happiness, and for the holiday's signature stuffed cookie, hamantaschen — in English, "Haman's pockets." (In Hebrew, they're oznei Haman, "Haman's ears.") Try one with a poppy-seed filling. Or a version with chocolate chips. Caramelized onion and poppy seed hamantaschen (above)? Yes, please, I'd like that very much. It's also the second Friday of Lent, the Christian period of reflection and sacrifice that precedes Easter. For those who abstain from eating meat on Lenten Fridays, indeed for any...

These Eggs, Though! - The New York Times These Eggs, Though! - The New York Times Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:30 AM PST Good morning. I don't like this season of "Pandemic." The writing's weak, and the plotlines keep shifting. Everything's so dark! I'm working hard to find pleasure these days: a fudgy brownie one of my kids baked, a glass of malted milk with it; hot honey shrimp; dan dan noodles. Sometimes that works. (Other times only serendipity will do: a lone cardinal sighted on top of a tree in snowy woods, singing, "cheer, cheer, cheer.") But scrambled eggs can work wonders on the darkest mood. (So does seeing a snowy owl.) J. Kenji López-Alt unveiled a new magic trick for them the other day, for extra-creamy scrambled eggs (above). The recipe appears intricate — it involves using a starch slurry and cubed butter — but if you run through it once or twice, it could become second nature and maybe your n...

My View: Wings and a prayer – chicken saves dinner party - Buffalo News

Image
There are those who rejoice in hosting a dinner party. They love the planning of it, the actual act of creating it, and finally, the joy of presenting it to their guests. How I envy them, since I belong to the group who quakes in fear at all the above. In spite of that, there comes a time when one must do what one must do. Marge McMillen, of East Amherst, finds hosting a dinner party to be stressful. I am lucky that I have retained some friends from my high school years, and that is quite remarkable when you consider that I am now in my 80s. Our group consisted of three couples from the good old days and one that we adopted along the way, making for a total of eight people. Each couple would take their turn hosting, at which time they would first present a cocktail hour (or more) consisting of drinks and snacks, then a full dinner, followed by a fun game of cards. I’ll never forget, nor will my friends, one that I hosted some years ago. The planning and sh...

What Yogurt Can Do for You - The New York Times What Yogurt Can Do for You - The New York Times Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:30 AM PST Good morning. I'm not sure why homemade yogurt (above) didn't take off this year the way sourdough bread did, the way kombucha kind of did. As Melissa Clark demonstrates, it's so simple to make, "and the payback is huge: a pot of tangy, silky yogurt made with ingredients you can control and personalized to your tastes." You'll use the stuff at breakfast, maybe, to eat with fruit preserves, with granola, with cold, segmented orange slices. And again at dinner, to accompany your chicken curry or sweet potatoes with cilantro-chile sauce. You'll eat it with Cheerios sometimes, stir it with beets, garlic and dill. Once you start with the yogurt, you'll find it hard to stop. (Don't eat dairy? Make yogurt with nut milk instead.) So start. Make yogurt on the stovetop while you...
