Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore to speak at free Black History Month dinner - MLive.com
SAGINAW, MI — Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore is among several guests expected to speak at a free community Black History Month dinner Sunday, Feb. 28.
Chuckie Lawrence, the “Beverages for Bros” founder who helped organize a food giveaway in December, is teaming up with some of the same collaborators to plan the dinner. Lawrence and others want to encourage the community to do good by bringing attention to “positive Black history,” he said, looking at achievements made by Black Saginaw residents past and present.
“We’re gonna showcase, we’re gonna have some positive speakers, we’re gonna have some people talk about business ventures they’re hoping will spark revitalization and opportunities for employment in the community,” he said.
Lawrence said Moore is one of several speakers participating in the event, “Reflection of History: Past and Present.” Speakers and attendees will discuss ideas for positive action in the community and celebrate the accomplishments of its residents, Lawrence said.
“We’re going to make this something that’s more annual, so we keep reiterating in our mind that we do have successful Black people in this community, past and present,” Lawrence said. “We think that if we get the right people on board and we get the right exposure, we can turn it into something truly beneficial.”
The event, which includes a meal and live music, takes place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at Konnections Event Hall, 128 N. Washington in downtown Saginaw. Admission is free and will be limited to the first 50 people, including event organizers, on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations to support making the dinner an annual event are appreciated, Lawrence said.
Event organizers will observe strict COVID-19 protocols, including social distancing, masks and temperature checks at the door, Lawrence said.
