Uncertified Cypriot Cheese Factories Can Still Export Halloumi - The National Herald

Image
NICOSIA – Cyprus' famed "white gold" halloumi cheese that doesn't melt when grilled, making it so popular, can be sold outside the country by factories who still haven't been certified for its production. That was reported by Philenews which noted the cheese as the EU's Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) to show it's original and genuine and is a sole product of the country. But there's some confusion over why the factories who aren't certified can sell the cheese elsewhere, including in the EU, which gave Cyprus the protection after other countries such as Bulgarian and Denmark were trying to market it. In Cyprus the  PDO and trademark protection which was an EU prerequisite is mandatory on all halloumi cheese and has seen the price rise some 20 percent because of that designation, the report said. Philenews also reported that products that previously bore the name "halloumi" but did not meet the specifications are no...

How Libby's Came to Dominate the Canned Pumpkin Market - Adweek

Image
For Thanksgiving 2021, we got to the bottom of why Ocean Spray labels its cranberry sauce upside-down. In 2022, we're looking at another popular canned good this time of year: Libby's 100% Pure Pumpkin. The nearly 200-year-old brand calls itself the No. 1 canned pumpkin in the U.S., and claims to sell "enough cans to produce 90 million pumpkin pies" on average each year. But who is Libby? And how did this canned pumpkin become the go-to for home bakers each November? The Johnny Appleseed of pumpkins The Libby's brand originated circa 1835 when a veteran of the War of 1812 named Elijah Dickinson moved to Illinois with what would become known as the Dickinson pumpkin seed. Tomatoes! – - Weekly Challenger

Image
There are three basic types of tomatoes, but the varieties within those types are endless. BY JOYCE WOODSON, Garden Enthusiast What's all the hype about tomatoes? Just that there is no better fruit than a juicy, vine-ripened homegrown tomato! I have 30 tomato plants this year, 12 different varieties, all grown from seed. Yes, that's a lot, but we eat them raw, cook with them and share with family and neighbors. There are never enough tomatoes. Home gardeners are generally limited to tomato plants available from nurseries and garden centers. Available varieties have expanded over the years, but there are so many more interesting types to grow if you start with seeds. Seed catalogs are filled with pages of tomatoes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Tomatoes are easy to grow from seed; our long growing season makes that more realistic. There are three basic types of tomatoes, but the varieties within those types are endless. Cherry types: Cherry refers to the size of ...

Kate Johnson: 'I forgot to lock the car door stuffed zucchini' (recipe) - Nevada Appeal

Image
A few weeks ago, I had my good friend say she wanted to share a few butternut and acorn squash that her neighbor had grown. I was thrilled with her generosity, as I have gardened for many years and have only had a few truly good years with regard to winter squash production. When I heard her pull up in the driveway, I went out to meet her and I observed her carrying squash in both hands and a HUGE zucchini under one arm. And so, this week I decided to share my recipe for "Oops, I Forgot to Lock the Car Door Stuffed Zucchini." This is a good recipe to use up any excess produce you have in the fridge – you can add many other fresh chopped or grated garden items like carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, etc. If you cannot use the entire zucchini, then simply shred, or spiral it up and freeze it for later use. Ingredients 1 large zucchini 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion chopped 2 cloves garlic minced 1-pound mushrooms quartered 1-pound sausage (pork or turkey) 4 tablespoons tomato p...

The best grilled cheese sandwich. Period. | The Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle - thejewishchronicle.net

Image
The grilled cheese sandwich is an undisputed classic. Melted cheese on buttery toasted bread really can't miss. Whether it is offered as an old-school white bread with American cheese version or a fancy combo of imported cheese, artisanal bread and specialty condiments, this sandwich is pretty wonderful. OK, OK, it's not exactly health food, but sometimes a splurge is warranted and, as far as indulgences go, this one is quite delicious. When it is paired with a simple salad like the one below and chased with a dessert of fresh fruit, sorbet or mint tea, the richness of the grilled cheese sandwich balances out. Over the last month, we ate a lot of dinners in front of the television supporting our beloved Philadelphia teams, and sandwiches lend themselves well to this type of eating. This particular version took advantage of the last of the late-season tomatoes and also incorporated a dash of spice. Coating the outside of the bread with mayonnaise is an un...

Espresso Martini Cocktail Recipe - Tasting Table

Image
Should you have a cocktail shaker, you can make use of it now. If you do not, a jar with a lid can be used, or a thermos, or a cup that you can fit another cup inside of. Basically, you want to create a more-or-less water-tight seal so your drink will stay contained while you shake it. Add some ice cubes to the drink, then cover it and shake it up while you slow-count to 15 — once 15 seconds (or a fair approximation thereof) is up, your drink should be sufficiently chilled.

How to Clean Your Air Fryer in 3 Easy Steps - Yahoo Life

Image
My air fryer has been my dinner hero for a while now. Of all my kitchen appliances — and I've got a lot of 'em — it's the one that I use most often. It cooks things that I'd normally make in my oven in half the time, and it gives fried, crispy foods that never seem to crisp up properly in a skillet, the crunch they need. The one downside of my air fryer is cleaning its main unit and removable parts once they're covered in baked-on grease and gunk. Unlike cooking in the oven, I wouldn't recommend just putting a sheet of parchment paper on the inside of the air fryer and letting it catch the stuck-on food. There are no shortcuts here: You just have to let it get covered in caked-on food and clean up the mess afterward. While this is a drawback to air-frying, the efficiency and convenience of the air fryer far outweigh the time spent on cleanup. If you're thinking of buying an air fryer or just bought one and need to know how to clean it, you're in luck: He...
