Kids & Money: Tax tips for first-time filers - Arizona Daily Star

Image
If you’re a college student or other young person preparing a federal income tax return for the first time, you may not be completely familiar with deductions, tax credits, filing forms and where to get help for free. I remember how anxious I felt when I filed a return for the first time, and it was a simple return. It also brings back memories of my father pouring over a stack of forms and receipts and cranking out numbers on an adding machine the size of a laptop computer. I procrastinated until the last minute before dropping my return in the mail. Which brings up my first tip for first-timers: Don’t put off filing until the 11th hour, but don’t rush either because that’s how mistakes are made, with one of the most common being forgetting to sign your return. If you do your taxes online, however, you will be prompted to electronically sign, making life much easier. You can get more time to file your return by filing IRS Form 4868, but getting an extension does not relie...

Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for tarka dal - The Guardian

Image
T here’s a lot to love about ceramicist Maham Anjum. Her hands that move with well-practised grace on her pottery wheel, moulding large, unfriendly-looking boulders of clay into elegant bowls and biryani pots. Her rickety, wooden studio in the midst of an overgrown garden that’s filled in summer with hollyhocks, butterflies and a curious little fox. Her work, of course, out of which we ate this heavenly dal. And the manner in which she introduced it: ‘I just put it all in a pot and stir it.’ It’s that simple, and now it is one of my favourite things to make and eat most weeks. Maham’s dal This dal, which has been photographed in one of Maham’s handmade bowls, is made with the very quick-cooking mung dal, which are the de-husked, split yellow insides of green mung beans – look for it in big supermarkets or Asian food shops. Since this recipe was first published in East, I’ve adapted it by cooking out the tomatoes and garlic first, though Maham just throws them into the pot with ever...

‘Farmageddon’ director talks benefits of homegrown natural food - Lowell Sun

Image
GROTON – Kristin Canty is a jack of all trades: farmer, restaurateur, public speaker and documentary filmmaker. But her entire journey to becoming a crusader for ancestral health started back with a different long-time job: mom. As she explained when visiting The Groton Center on Sunday, Feb. 23 during the center’s Speaker Series, the Concord resident said she came into looking for raw and fermented food in 1999 when her then four-year-old son continued to suffer from debilitating asthma and numerous environmental allergies with no sign of proper medical treatment available. After doing her own research, she discovered that others who also had natural allergies were cured after drinking unpasteurized milk. After doing more research and testing the milk herself, she integrated the milk believed to be richer in nutrients and enzymes into her son’s diet. Six weeks later, her son was healthier than ever before. From there, Canty said she started further investigating buying raw and ferm...

Trader Joe — who popularized high-quality groceries and Napa’s Two-Buck Chuck — dies at 89 - MarketWatch

Image
Joe Coulombe envisioned a new generation of young grocery shoppers emerging in the 1960s, one that wanted healthy, tasty, high-quality food they couldn’t find in most supermarkets and couldn’t afford to buy in the few high-end gourmet outlets. So he found a new way to bring everything from a then-exotic snack food called granola to the California-produced wines that for flavor compared with anything from France. And he made shopping for them almost as much fun as sailing the high seas when he created Trader Joe’s, a quirky little grocery store filled with nautical themes and staffed not by managers and clerks but by “captains and mates.” From the time he opened his first store in Pasadena, California, in 1967 until his death Friday at age 89, Coulombe watched his namesake business rise from a cult favorite of educated but underpaid young people — and a few hippies — to a retail giant with more than 500 outlets in over 40 states. A giant yes, but one that across more than half a cen...

Warren) Amazon launched its newest project with “Just Walk Out” shopping technology this week at Amazon Go Grocery in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Amazon looking to open a new nationwide grocery chain “While it, admittedly, may be creepy, it’s also run by some “pretty impressive technology,” GeekWire Managing Editor Taylor Soper told KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula Show earlier in the week. “It can figure out if you’re holding a banana, or if you put the banana back on the rack, or if you take a box of cereal,” Soper said. “It knows everything you’re doing, which can be really convenient. But like I said, really kind of creepy, especially as we move toward this kind of surveillance state with facial recognition and all these technologies.” Guest host Mike Lewis wondered if you could hold a banana, eat ...

Tony Curcuru discovers his roots - Lincoln Courier

Editor's note: Today we welcome Laura Elliott who will share stories on the people from the Logan County who gives our readers insight to the different paths we all take on the journey. Taking a Leap It takes courage to muster up a leap from the known and seemingly secure into the wilderness of your heart’s desire. You hear the stories—corporate exec leaves the rat race and opens a winery, teacher leaves the classroom to become a chocolatier. Some find a way to balance the two worlds. I was recently given a piece of pottery and on the accompanying business card the artist described herself as, "Attorney at Law, Potter at Heart." I hope she enjoys her day job as well as her craft. Yet for some, the day job grinds against the grain of their soul, and rather than live a compromised life they boldly forge a new path—one that makes their heart sing. This was the case for Tony Curcuru, who works at Sorrento’s Pizza—a restaurant business in Lincoln that his grandparents star...

If the coronavirus spreads in America, food delivery companies could see a surge in demand — are they ready? - MarketWatch

Image
GREG BAKER/AFP via Getty Images Chinese workers in February carrying a cart of vegetables meant as groceries for nearby residents. From movie chains to luxury retailers, the coronavirus could cut into earnings for many consumer-facing companies if the virus that’s infected more than 82,000 people worldwide escalates in America and forces consumers to stay home. Yet bottom lines could go in the opposite direction for companies with food delivery built into their business model, according to market experts who point out everyone still has to eat — even if they do not leave their house. More Americans are using the internet for their grocery shopping and meal plans, and that trend was going strong before coronavirus concerns, said David Portalatin, vice president, food industry advisor, for The NPD Group, a market research firm. People have all sorts of ways to bring food into their homes, ranging from an order on Amazon AMZN, -0.03%   Prime, Walmart WMT, -2.46%   Grocer...

Image
Listen up, Feb. 29 babies: In exchange for everyone pretty much ignoring your birthday for the past three years, several restaurants and fast-food outlets would like to offer you and your friends some discounted food. People who were born on Leap Day, or “Leaplings” as they’re sometimes called, are given short shrift for nearly three-quarters of their lives, at least by the folks in charge of the calendar industry. But in some ways, that makes their quadrennial birthdays all the more exciting — especially when there’s cheap eats involved. LEAP DAY PROPOSALS: THE STORY BEHIND THE TRADITION Keep reading to check out some of the best deals available on Feb. 29, before they, too, disappear for another four years while your birthdate fades into irrelevance. Krispy Kreme This one’s for the world’s newest Leaplings (as well as their parents, their guardians and their caretakers/doctors at the hospital). Amazon To Enter India's Food Delivery Space - pymnts.com

Image
In a move that could interrupt the duopoly of Zomato and Swiggy, competition in the food delivery space in India could intensify as Amazon India reportedly aims to enter the industry in the near future. The eCommerce merchant is forecasted to test its on-demand food effort in Bengaluru, livemint reported. Amazon India’s food delivery system is currently only available to workers. Pilots are taking place throughout five high-density areas in the municipality. Amazon is forecasted to provide the offering as part of Amazon Fresh or Prime Now. According to the report, a representative for Amazon India did not reply to queries. A joint venture with Amazon India and Catamaran Ventures, Prione Business Services, has reportedly been inking deals with brands to list on Amazon with commissions in the range of 10 percent to 15 percent. Zomato has been engaged in a battle with Swiggy that has caused “heady revenue growth,” per the report, but has also brought about strong losses dur...

Jeff Skrentny is trying to peer identify 2,500 living things in Cook County this year on iNaturalist. - Chicago Sun-Times

Image
Jeff Skrentny mentioned desire to document 2,500 living things in Cook County at the showing of Bob Dolgan’s documentary, “Monty and Rose,” at Martyrs’ on North Lincoln. That caught my attention. It seemed unlikely enough that I asked why. “I will be attempting to see and have peer identified via iNaturalist, as many species of all living things as I can in Cook County this year,” he emailed. “I foolishly said I had hoped to document 2,500 living things in the county in the year, but further research shows me that such a number will be a heck of a stretch goal.” Stretch? Last year all observers had 2,472 living things in Cook County and just over 3,500 things in all the years of iNaturalist. Since he joined iNaturalist in June of 2016, Skrentny has made 9,000 observations of 1,700 living things. On Tuesday, I reached Skrentny at a Toyota dealership. “Just so happens that I am stuck getting my Prius, `The Belafonte,’ cleaned and checked at the shop, so I can continue my exploration...

Credit Tips with Tiff - Credit.com News

Dear Tiff, Prior to filing bankruptcy 2 years ago, one of my store cards is the only thing that got us through Christmas. I did not list it on our bankruptcy, so the limit is high and I’ve kept up with payments, but I still have about $3500 that I want to transfer to a card with a 0% APR for 15-18 months to get it paid off. My credit is 711 and rising, but I can’t get approved, I’m assuming because of the bankruptcy. Do I have any other options? –Looking for Loans in All the Wrong Places Dear Looking, Great job on getting your credit score up!
