... moreBRANFORD — Four Branford organizations helping people in need will get a boost in the form of contributions distributed from the proceeds of the Feb. 20 Martin Luther King Jr. tribute breakfast, organizers of the breakfast announced this week.
This year’s breakfast raised $3,000, said Margot Hardenbergh, a member of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Heritage Committee, in an email.
That money will be distributed to the following organizations:
The Community Dining Room.
Feed Branford Kids.
The Branford Fuel Bank.
The Branford Counseling Center.
The breakfast was organized by the committee with support from the Branford Rotary Club, Branford High School and its Culinary Arts Program and Music Makers, with guest speaker Virginia T. Spell of the Urban League of Southern Connecticut.
“The 2020 Shoreline Community celebrated The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday by gathering together for breakfast, singing” and speakers who touched on ‘the need for love,’ Hardenbergh said via email. “The Breakfast was organized by volunteers and will now help the work of many in our community keep healthy and safe.”
The Community Dining Room, 30 Harrison Ave., for years has provided meals to people along the Shoreline.
Feed Branford Kids, a new recipient, provides meal bags for children while schools are closed at its warehouse at 21 Business Park Drive every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as on Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green.
Families do not need to be registered with Feed Branford Kids to receive the meals, Hardenbergh said.
The Emergency Fuel Fund helps the needy with fuel bills.
The Branford Counseling Center helps the needy in many, many ways by providing crisis intervention and short-term assistance.
The annual MLK breakfast, began in 1985 at St. Stephen’s A.M.E. Zion Church and later shepherded on by the Branford Clergy Association, has grown over the years and has now become a communitywide breakfast with participation from all religions, ethnic groups and many community organizations.
