BERNARDSTON — The United Church of Bernardston’s fundraising plans this year have been uprooted, resulting in the cancellation of not only the church’s monthly roast beef suppers, but its annual Bernardston Gas Engine Show and Flea Market.

But, when members of the Bernardston Kiwanis Club learned of the string of canceled fundraisers, they decided their next drive-thru chicken pot pie dinner would support the church instead.

“When I heard the news about the Gas Engine Show, my shoulders dropped,” said Kiwanis Club member Dan Devine. “(The United Church of Bernardston is) always helping us. This is a perfect way for us to help them out.”

The dinner is planned for Saturday at 5 p.m. Devine said that although the meal is free, club members will be accepting donations for the church.

“If you can give a little, that’s great,” he said. “If you can’t, that’s OK, too.”

The Kiwanis Club first held a drive-thru meal service in the church parking lot last month, handing out roughly 250 meals. In preparation for this weekend, Devine said members are aiming to make roughly 500 chicken pot pies, noting that Greenfield Savings Bank helped pay for the ingredients. Dinner will also include butternut squash, cranberry sauce and a roll.

Drivers will be instructed to enter the church parking lot from Hartwell Street. Devine said if people call before the event, members will put pies aside for delivery — within Bernardston town lines. Bernardston residents who are unable to make it Saturday but are still in need of a meal can contact Kiwanis Club member Joel Cole at 413-834-5484 to inquire about having a meal delivered. Anyone delivering a meal would drop the food outside the front door to avoid personal contact.
