Food insecurity in Massachusetts: How to help, and how to find help - Boston Herald

September is Hunger Action Month — which is particularly important during the coronavirus pandemic, which has increased food insecurity. If you need food, here are some resources that can help:

  • Greater Boston Food Bank’s Need Food website: www.gbfb.org/need-food/. Search by zip code and town to find a GBFB partner agency in your area.
  • MASS211: Dial 211 or visit www.mass211.org
  • Project Bread Food Resource Hotline: 1-800-645-8333. The hotline has information about school meal sites and SNAP application assistance.
  • Boston311: Dial 311 if you live in Boston.

If you want to help:

  • Throughout the month of September, Whole Foods Market is encouraging everyone to visit the Greater Boston Food Bank’s website at GBFB.org/Click2Give, and for every click, Whole Foods will donate 45 healthy meals to people in Eastern Massachusetts.
  • Fill out your census form before the Sept. 31 deadline. The census determines how the federal government allocates representation in Congress and federal funding to states, including funding for assistance programs like SNAP and WIC.
  • For more information about Hunger Action Month, participating events and how to advocate for hunger policies, visit gbfb.org/hungeractionmonth.
