EVANSVILLE, Ind. — More and more Evansville non-profits are finding ways to bring their Fall Festival booths to life for at least a few days this fall, hoping to raise some of the desperately-needed cash that their food specialties bring in every year.

Christ Gospel Pentecostal Church on East Riverside relies on their booth to keep the building in good repair and make improvements to it.

“Money from the festival goes into the building fund; recently we used it to put in a new ceiling,” said the Rev. Sharon Spicer. “We used money from the building fund to remodel the front of the church. We saved and built a new fellowship hall and a new kitchen about 10 years ago. Whatever the need is for the building, that’s where the money goes.”

We stopped in the Christ Gospel kitchen recently as a gathering of congregation ladies turned out hundreds of fragrant quickbreads. Aromas of zucchini, banana nut and butter pecan bread flowed out of the kitchen and into the parking lot. On a normal year, the church will sell nearly 2,000 of them.

Christ Gospel’s Booth will be operating at the church at 2301 Riverside Drive on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 24-25 and Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8-9

“This year is unchartered waters,” Spicer said. “People know us, and I don’t think we’ll have trouble, but I’m not sure how much to order. Our theory is that God knows how much we need to make, and that’s how much we’ll make.”

Everything on Christ Gospel’s menu except the ice cream is homemade. The apples in the dumplings are hand-picked and hand-peeled, the pie dough is scratch, and even the Bugles for the famous “sharks teeth” are filled with peanut butter and dipped in white chocolate by hand.

The smoked pulled pork and chicken that tops split baked potatoes is contributed each year by Junior and Becky Moore of Indianapolis, whose mother attended Christ Gospel when she was young.

Customers may pre-order now, although pre-ordering is not necessary. Quickbreads may be ordered and picked up now by appointment.

On the West Side, the Catalyst Church at 3232 Claremont Avenue has put together a Mini Fall Festival at the church with five booths.

The Catalyst Church Food Pantry has an annual operating budget of $23,000, much of which is supplied by festival sales.

This year, Catalyst and the Outboard Boating Club will be operating booths Oct. 5-7 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and on October 8 -10 they will be joined by the Redeemer Fellowship Church, St. James West UMC and Eagle’s View Church.

“We are a new church, but the food pantry has been open for about seven years,” said Pastor David Whitmore. “One hundred percent of the profit from our booth immediately goes back to the food pantry and other missions. Pre-pandemic we were feeding about 6,000 meals a month through our food pantry.”

Whitmore has been working with the health department to create a strategic plan that works within all the CDC’s guidelines for safety.

The Catalyst Church booth thoroughly and unapologetically indulges in the love of deep-fried festival foods. Fried “bites” include mac ’n cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apple pie, corn nuggets and more, or get a deep-fried sampler which is one of every item. Desserts include raspberry or caramel cheesecake chimis.

See the entries below for all the booths currently planning on serving this fall. Our online feature will be updated with any that are added in coming weeks.
