Knoxboro Community Church is looking for recipes and donations for cookbook - Utica Observer Dispatch

By Ellie Abel  |  KNOXBORO KNOTES

Our Knoxboro Community Church is currently sponsoring a community effort to develop a new traditional cookbook. We are seeking vintage, tried and true recipes and they are being sampled at our monthly church gathering on the last Sunday of each month right after the 10:30 a.m. church service.

We have lots of data to consider for inclusion in the cookbook and we are currently accepting artwork and having a Cookbook Cover Contest with the deadline for entries extended to October 30. Prizes will be awarded for artwork and the winner of the Cookbook Cover Contest will win $50.

A 1953 Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) cookbook called the “Cookbook of Favorite Recipes” was found in a box lot of auction items purchased recently. It’s a treasure because it contains many old fashioned and tasty recipes gathered by the women of the WSCS of the Parkside Methodist Church in Vernon Center.

The cookbook is also a bit of a historic record since it contains info about the organization of the WSCS. Many of the names of the founders are familiar, reflecting family histories of the area and our neighboring churches. The book was one of many fundraising efforts carried out by these women to finance projects that would support their church.

Their projects listed under “Equipment and Improvements Financed by the Society” included gifts for the church remodeling and furnace fund (1947), electric coffee makers and a kitchen gas stove (1949), with a notation that MYF joined in the effort. In 1951, new dishes for the kitchen were made possible courtesy of Viola Wenham and stainless steel silver was purchased as well as donations from the Oneida Limited courtesy of Algia Wood. There is also recorded silver donated courtesy of Dora Roberts.

In 1953, a steam table was donated by the society. The WSCS was organized on Sept. 10, 1940 at the Vernon Center Methodist church with 45 charter members. The officers for 1953-54 listed in the cook book include president Mrs. Evelyn Kitchen; vice president Mrs. Mary Clinch; recording secretary Mrs. Ruth Hayward; treasurer Mrs. Grace Simons; promotion secretary Mrs. Flora Jacobs; secretary of local church activities Mrs. Ruth Deal; secretary of children’s work Mrs. Grace Deal; secretary of youth work Mrs. Ruth Hayward; secretary of student work Mrs. Ann Hunt; and secretary of supply work Mrs. Jane Salm.

Some of the descendants of the WSCS members are well known to the Knoxboro community and have continued to carry on the tradition of sharing recipes and specialty dishes at meetings and holding Sunday post service lunches, receptions, and buffets.

A favorite tradition and gathering in Knoxboro Community Church (KCC) is Souper bowl Sunday, marking a special community lunch on the Sunday before the Super Bowl annually. A bountiful variety of soups, breads, desserts and beverages is shared at this and other events throughout the year.

There is also a tradition by women of the KCC to provide welcome baskets to newcomers in the Knoxboro Community. The baskets contain homemade goods including homemade tomato cream and other soups, breads and cookies and welcoming messages and gifts.

Recipes are always appreciated and a collection of traditional and community recipes is in progress. For information on this cookbook or to donate recipes send an email to Ellie Abel at eabel21@gmail.com. Donations to support the cookbook project will be accepted by Knoxboro Community Church at 5563 Knoxboro Road, Munnsville, NY 13409.
