Eagan-based Sushi Avenue Sold To Japanese Firm
Sushi Avenue operates sushi kiosks in hundreds of grocery stores across the United States.Tokyo-based conglomerate Sojitz Corp. Aims to establish a foothold in the United States by buying a Minnesota-based sushi company.
In a Tuesday news release, Sojitz announced that it has "acquired all takeout sushi businesses" of Eagan-based Sushi Avenue Inc.
The release said Sushi Avenue has over 300 retail locations in more than 20 states, though the company's website says it operates over 500 retail locations in 33 states.
The precise scope and value of the transaction isn't yet clear; a spokesperson for Sushi Avenue directed questions to Sojitz's news release.
Sushi Avenue also has three full-service Masu Sushi & Robata restaurants in the Twin Cities. The future of the restaurants isn't yet clear, either, and Sojitz's announcement made no mention of them. The Masu Sushi location in Northeast Minneapolis has already been closed since April due to a fire. The company's restaurant at the Mall of America, meanwhile, has closed after its expired, a mall spokesperson said in an email.
For its part, Sojitz is a huge corporate presence in Japan with holdings in numerous industries, including aerospace, energy, and more. In Tuesday's news release, the company noted that it has "extensive experience in in the tuna farming and processing business as well as the seafood wholesale business."
"In the U.S., high-end sushi restaurants previously set the trends, but in recent years sushi consumption has become localized and widespread with sushi offered even at school cafeterias and other casual dining settings," Sojitz officials said in the press release. "The U.S. Sushi market has expanded to nearly 1.6 times the size of Japan's sushi market."
Nay Hla, who founded Sushi Avenue in 2004, last year won an EY Entrepreneur of the Year Heartland Award.
New Sushi Spot With $15 Lunch Special And Taylor Swift Roll Opens In Downtown New Orleans
A new option for lunch has opened downtown in the New Orleans Central Business District.
Sushi Takumi serves traditional Japanese curries, noodles and sushi, plus a few specialty rolls.
The restaurant opened in the previous Drip space on Carondelet Street.
The lightly spiced curried beef stew is a traditional Japanese curry.
BY CHELSEA SHANNONStaff writerJohnny Wang opened the spot after working in multiple restaurants in Lafayette and New Orleans. He said he's excited to put all his ideas together in this shop with a name that translates to sushi craftsman.
Wang started learning to cook from his mom and continued his education to include many international cuisines. He plans to add more dishes and curries as the restaurant grows and changes in the small space.
But for now, Wang pointed me in the direction to try Mama's curried beef stew with potato. The rich curry is cooked for at least six hours before it hits the table. Each bite of this dish allows the slightly spiced creamy sauce to meld together the flavors from the carrot, potato and beef and enables them to sing.
Five pieces of sushi and a California roll is included in the sushi lunch at Sushi Takumi.
BY CHELSEA SHANNONStaff writerHe and his staff roll up simple yet delicious rolls and find fun ways to present fish. When I went to get lunch with my friends after the restaurant had been open for a week, I couldn't pass up getting the sushi lunch and the Taylor Swift roll.
The sushi lunch costs $14.95 and comes with tuna, salmon, white tuna, shrimp, crab, a california roll and a miso soup. The simple lunch is filling and at a reasonable price.
Wang said he wanted to open in the CBD because so many people come to visit and stay for conferences, in addition to the people of New Orleans who come downtown for concerts and work. He wants as many different people to try his food as possible.
Taylor Swift roll is among the list of specialty rolls at Sushi Takumi.
BY CHELSEA SHANNONStaff writerAnd that includes the Swifties that will descend upon the town in the coming months. Wang observed what happened in Singapore when Swift went for the Eras Tour and knew he wanted to have a roll with her name on it. The roll is a lightly spicy tuna avocado roll slathered in spicy salmon with some texture from the wasabi tobiko and tempura crunch toppings. This roll is really something — some might say it's "fearless."
