A New Taiwanese Wheel Cake Destination Just Opened In NYC

An auspiciously titled wheel cake spot rolled into New York City this week, with the opening of Money Cake at Tangram food hall in Flushing. It is the first United States location for the Taiwanese brand, which also has a presence in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Montreal.

Money Cake's round treats come in sweet or savory selections. They're made à la minute with waffle batter and fillings like red bean, taro, and custard-chocolate varieties that also incorporate Ferrero Rocher candies and Oreo cookies. Special, only in New York options will include pepperoni pizza and chicken pesto, with new, rotating flavors each month. Offerings will be limited until April 6, when the full menu becomes available. In a belated opening celebration, on April 6 and 7, customers will also be invited to spin a prize wheel for chances to win Money Cake discounts, gift cards and merchandise.

"As a Taiwanese-American entrepreneur, I am drawn to opportunities that weave together my heritage with the innovation and excitement that comes with entering a new market," Money Cake partner Michael Hsueh is quoted as saying in a statement. "We are excited to bring traditional Taiwanese wheel cakes to New York City's most diverse borough—but expect some local New York flavor, too!"

Money Cake joins a movie theater, beer hall, and plenty of other food and drink vendors on the sprawling Tangram property.

Money Cake is located on the second floor of the Tangram food hall at 133-33 39th Avenue in Queens.

Hyper-realistic and over-the-top cakes aren't a new thing, but they became an internet phenomenon when the "everything is cake" memes exploded in the midst of the pandemic. Videos of people cutting into everyday objects to reveal that they are actually cake took off. The Netflix series put nine bakers' realistic cake-making skills to the test. No matter how silly the games might seem, there was a lot of money on the line. Here's who ultimately won the competition and how much money they took home.

Is It Cake? Threw nine bakers into a baking competition with a twist. For the bakers' first challenge, host Mikey Day presents them with an array of everyday items and they must decide — you guessed it — which one is cake.

This first round determines which three competitors will move onto the baking portion. The bakers then select an everyday object that they must painstakingly create in cake form over the course of eight hours.

The bakers then present their cakes to a panel of judges. The cakes are disguised amongst similar everyday objects, and it's now up to the judges to choose which one is cake. If the judges choose wrong, the baker is in the running to win $5,000.

If multiple bakers fool the judges, they ultimately decide whose cake wins the round, and the cash. The winner is then shown a bag of cash and a cake that looks like a bag of cash. If they correctly identify the cake, they win another $5,000. If not, that money is added to the next round's pot.

Who won 'Is It Cake?'

Is It Cake? Is not an elimination game, and there were opportunities for all the contestants to win money. However, there was still an obvious winner. The final round pitted the three best-performing contestants against each other in one final competition.

These contestants were Andrew Fuller, Hemu Basu, and April Julian. The bakers were able to sculpt any hyper-realistic cake they wanted. Julian fooled the judges with her sewing machine cake, and Fuller advanced as well with a cake made to look like a trunk. However, Basu's marble sculpture cake was found out by the judges.

After some deliberation, the judges named Fuller the overall winner. At the end of the final episode, an emotional Fuller stated, "I've never come this far in something. I feel like I'm finally stepping into the person that I'm supposed to be and it's just a cake show but this is huge for me."

Fuller is a cake sculptor, baker, and owner of Sugar Freakshow, a custom cake business located in Des Moine, Iowa. He specializes in hyper-realistic cakes, often creating products for clients who want to "gross out their guests." Fuller also shared in the Netflix special that he delivers his cakes in a hearse with green flames painted down the side of it.

How much money did Andrew Fuller win?

Andrew Fuller won a massive prize of $50,000 for winning the final competition in Is It Cake? However, that's not all the cash that he took home. Fuller started baking in episode 3, where his conch shell cake earned him $5,000. Although Fuller did not correctly identify the cake bag of cash, he continued on to compete in episode 4. His challah bread cake earned him another $5,000 and this time he correctly identified the cash cake, earning him another $15,000.

Fuller again secured $5,000 with his red solo cup cake in episode 5. However, he did not accurately select the money cake again. Regardless, Fuller's final earnings totaled a whopping $80,000. According to The Ancestry, he plans to use the money to continue to grow Sugar Freakshow, as well as travel with his partner.

A wedding cake baker has just revealed a hack that #WeddingTok is calling brilliant — and leaving some viewers feeling a little cheated.

@IMakeWeddingCakes recently gained more than 15 million views and 1.8 million likes when it uploaded footage of a money-saving trick that couples on a budget will appreciate.

Anyone planning a wedding knows how quickly things can go sideways — as in the case of this bride whose hot mic caught her making an embarrassingly "crass" joke to the groom — which is why @IMakeWeddingCakes' trick is so brilliant: It takes enormous pressure off the ceremonial wedding cake (and puts much-needed money back in couples' pockets).

In the viral video — captioned "Could you tell?" — @IMakeWeddingCakes demonstrates how couples can save money on their ceremonial cake — while still delivering on the "wow" factor for guests.

While the baker's cake appears to be an elaborate seven-tier cake, it's actually all an illusion — a very convincing one.

With this trick, couples would still be able to slice into an ornate cake for the ceremonial cutting — but they would serve their guests from a much cheaper sheet cake.

In a follow-up video, @IMakeWeddingCakes gives viewers a closer look at its process, this time with a fondant-covered, one-tier cake.

Some were stumped by the functionality of the cake. "How do they know where to cut it?" one user asked.

"It's marked!" the bakery replied.

TikTokers were stunned by the baker's clever money-saving trick.

"2k cakes made at $30. Amazing," one user wrote.

Others shared their own experience with illusionary wedding cakes.

"I did this for my wedding for the cake cutting ceremony and photos. It was wheeled in the back for 'cutting' and sheet cake served 😉🤫," wrote one user, whose comment was liked over 103,000 times.

"My mom and dad did this at their wedding in 1992. More people should do it if they want to reduce costs," another user wrote.

Some TikTokers weren't sure how well they'd be able to pull off the fake cake trick.

"I'd forget where the real piece is and eat frosted styrofoam to save face," one user joked.

"Imagine cutting the wrong spot 😂," laughed another user.

Some TikTokers didn't like the idea of being cheated out of expensive cake at someone's wedding.

"I don't go to obnoxious weddings to eat Walmart sheet cake 😤 I want fancy looking expensive wedding cake 😂," one user wrote.

"Im a pastry snob, and if i get some trash costco sheet cake instead of a delicious expensive for nothing cake imma trip 🤣," commented another.

Considering the average price of weddings in the U.S. — more than $29,000 in 2023, according to wedding planning platform Zola — couples will no doubt be glad to pinch a few pennies wherever they can, even if it leaves guests feeling slightly cheated.
