With Orange County staying in the red tier for at least two more weeks and Los Angeles County still in the initial purple tier, the coronavirus pandemic remains a major factor in residents’ dining out habits. But in spite of a rising death toll from COVID-19 in the county, one Huntington Beach restaurant has had no qualms expressing an anti-mask position since the early days of the pandemic. Basilico’s Pasta e Vino recently continued that stance, putting up a large billboard inspired by “The Godfather” movies in Los Angeles near the Beverly Center. The billboard on La Cienega Boulevard reads, “Leave the mask, take the cannoli,” a play on the Godfather films and the line “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.” It shows the well-known puppeteer’s hand, uses the familiar font from the films and directs viewers to the restaurant’s Instagram page. Breakfast Republic continues its steady march across San Diego with another location set to open in downtown La Jolla. The daytime restaurant is coming to the corner of Pearl Street and Draper Avenue, where it replaces Cruisers Gourmet Subs across from El Pescador. At 1,800-square-feet, it’ll be the coziest Breakfast Republic yet, with a seating capacity of approximately 75 across the interior and the 250-square-foot patio. This past May, Rise & Shine Restaurant Group owner Johan Engman rolled out a companion grab-and-go eatery call Eggies, which has opened alongside his existing Breakfast Republics in the East Village, Liberty Station, and Pacific Beach. The new La Jolla location will also include an Eggies, with its menu of breakfast sandwiches available via a sidewalk window. Dick’s Drive-in Announces First Western Washington Stops for Food Truck - Eater Seattle

For the first time in its 66 year-old history, iconic local fast food chain Dick’s Drive-In will debut a food truck — and the franchise announced Wednesday where the mobile operation will stop by later this fall: Bellevue, Bellingham, Everett, Renton, and West Seattle. A few weeks ago, the restaurant had posted an online form for people to suggest which Western Washington cities should host the trucks first, and those five areas made the initial cut based on the vote tally. The trucks should be ready to roll by mid-November, although there are no specific locations secured yet for the announced spots. A rep for Dick’s tells Eater Seattle the company is still waiting for final poll numbers to come in before the effort moves forward. When it officially hits the road, the food truck will serve the full menu of its famed deluxe burgers, shakes, and beverages. Amazon Is Now Scanning Your Hand To Pay For Groceries - Forbes

You can now pay for your shopping by scanning your palm getty It is now possible to pay for your groceries with your hand. Amazon is trialing the process in two of its Amazon Go stores in Seattle, according to Business Insider . Customers register their credit card and mobile number into the system at one of the stores. They then link that card to their hand by scanning their palm on a biometric reader–Amazon says the process takes about a minute and customers can register both palms if they choose to. The BBC reported that the scanner is called Amazon One and registers an image of the user’s palm, allowing them to pay as they hover their hand over it, for “about a second or so”. Amazon said that it wasn’t possible to unintentionally pay for someone else’s shopping as you have to intentionally scan your hand over the machine.
