Walmart launches two-hour delivery service for groceries, electronics, and more - The Verge

Walmart is launching a new delivery service, called Express Delivery, that will get purchased items to a customers’ home in less than two hours, the company announced on Thursday. The new service could be helpful if you need to get items in a hurry while respecting shelter-in-place orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. You’ll be able to use Express Delivery for more 160,000 items, including “groceries, everyday essentials, toys and electronics,” Walmart says. Express Delivery will cost $10 in addition to the regular charge for delivery unless you’re a member of the company’s Delivery Unlimited subscription service, in which case you’ll just pay $10 for Express Delivery. (Similar to Amazon Prime, Delivery Unlimited costs $98 annually or $12.95 per month.) Tech company pivots its household help network to deliver groceries - Crain's New York Business

Six months after Umbrella raised $5 million from investors for its AAA-like membership service to help senior citizens with household tasks, Covid-19 disrupted its business model. Sending gig workers to help its paying members, all of whom are 60 or older, was no longer feasible under social-distancing policies. Even if it were possible, "changing a light bulb or fixing a leaky faucet wasn't as important as keeping people safe," said Lindsay Ullman, chief executive and co-founder. Instead, Umbrella heard that one thing was particularly vital to the people it serves: finding groceries. "We had thousands of phone calls with members by the end of February, asking them what they need," Ullman said. "We kept hearing, 'If I can't go outside my house, how can I get the things I need?'" The Brooklyn-based company has suspended its annual $199 membership fee and has spent the past two months building up an army of volunteer grocery shoppers. ...

It’s no secret that Americans love breakfast. And while the meal is truly a national treasure, it has changed a lot over the years. We broke down the price people paid for a homemade breakfast between 1937 and 2000, and it might shock you. (Madeline Buiano and Jordi Lippe-McGraw, The Daily Meal)

Recipe of the Week: Treaty Oak’s smoked pulled pork tacos with pickled pineapple - austin360 Recipe of the Week: Treaty Oak’s smoked pulled pork tacos with pickled pineapple - austin360 Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:20 PM PDT Backyard barbecues aren't exactly what they used to be, but the act of smoking meat itself is inherently a solitary activity. Getting up early in the morning to put the meat on the pit and then feeding it wood hours before guests arrive. We're not hosting guests these days, but barbecuing is a good way to spend half of the day outside to smoke meat that you can use for days. (And give away to appreciative neighbors.) This pulled pork recipe from Treaty Oak pitmaster Scott Fogle pairs the smokiness of slow-cooked meat with the spicy sweetness of pickled pineapple that gets a kick from a serrano pepper. Treaty Oak continues to sell smoked meats by the half-pound — as well as groceries and cocktail kits — but this pi...

12 inspiring cookbooks for coronavirus quarantine - Los Angeles Times 12 inspiring cookbooks for coronavirus quarantine - Los Angeles Times Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:00 AM PDT This is an excellent time to have some absorbing cookbooks on hand. Not only because many of us could use inspiration figuring out what to cook while we shelter but also because we're craving connection. A parallel has emerged between restaurants and cookbooks in recent years: In the same way that chefs are expressing autobiography through their menus, hazarding to reveal themselves and where they come from, the best cookbook authors have also become willing to risk exposing their truest selves on the page. It's a daunting feat, being equal at recipe mastery and storytelling. Some of the recent books that achieve this remind us about what we're missing while restaurant dining rooms remain closed; others shed light on home traditions around the country and th...

Chipotle Shared Its Guacamole Recipe - Simplemost

Food & Recipes Grab some chips and mix up a batch of this guac! Clint Davis 2020-04-30 Since getting food from restaurants at this point can be an exercise in aggravating your anxiety, Chipotle has decided to take some pity on all of us. The beloved burrito chain has decided to spill the black beans on one of its most cherished menu items: guacamole. While you can obviously find recipes for guacamole strewn across the internet like the tortilla chip crumbs that currently decorate your couch, there’s just something different about Chipotle’s signature guac. The dip that we all gladly pay extra for can now be made in your own kitchen using some pretty basic ingredients and no special equipment. On Twitter last week, Chipotle shared the full recipe and it looks pretty simple. Chipotle Guac Recipe, a thread Ingredients: 2 ripe Hass avocados 2 tsp lime juice 2 tbsp cilantro (chopped) 1/4 cup red onion (diced) 1/2 jalapeño including seeds (diced) 1/4 tsp kosher salt — Ch...

While simple fabric masks don't test as well, studies show that homemade masks still can help stop the spread of viral illness and offer adequate protection for people practicing social distancing, even if a mask is capturing a lower percentage of small particles. Drive-thru pot pie dinner to benefit United Church of Bernardston - The Recorder

Image
Staff Writer Published: 4/30/2020 2:53:54 PM BERNARDSTON — The United Church of Bernardston’s fundraising plans this year have been uprooted, resulting in the cancellation of not only the church’s monthly roast beef suppers, but its annual Bernardston Gas Engine Show and Flea Market. But, when members of the Bernardston Kiwanis Club learned of the string of canceled fundraisers, they decided their next drive-thru chicken pot pie dinner would support the church instead. “When I heard the news about the Gas Engine Show, my shoulders dropped,” said Kiwanis Club member Dan Devine. “(The United Church of Bernardston is) always helping us. This is a perfect way for us to help them out.” The dinner is planned for Saturday at 5 p.m. Devine said that although the meal is free, club members will be accepting donations for the church. “If you can give a little, that’s great,” he said. “If you can’t, that’s OK, too.” The Kiwanis Club first held a drive-thru meal service in the churc...

Shutterstock Stock is incredibly easy and inexpensive to make at home because you can use just about any combination of bones, vegetables, and herbs you have on hand.  The easiest way to cook stock is to use the bones, cartilage, or carcasses from a meat dish — so whenever you have a chicken dinner, you can put the scraps to good use.  It lasts for a while in your freezer, too, so you can make it and defrost it whenever you need.  Check out our guide to the best stockpots you can buy.  Stock is one of those pantry staples that professional chefs always suggest you should have on hand, thanks to its versatility. Sure, it serves as a base for soups and stews. But stock can also be used instead of water to add major flavor to things like sauces and risotto. We Are All Doing the Best That We Can - The New York Times We Are All Doing the Best That We Can - The New York Times Posted: 07 Apr 2020 07:27 AM PDT Good morning. I took the dog to the beach on Saturday, stayed a long way away from people, stared out at the elegant gannets prowling for bunker, at a trio of terns pinwheeling in the sun, at a bufflehead couple floating on the swell. Then I went home and made sourdough pineapple muffins, riffing off Marian Burros's elegant recipe for the blueberry ones they used to make at Jordan Marsh in Boston. This was not like me to do, for I'm not generally a baker and rarely an improvisatory one. But they were light and sweet and a little salty, and the children were pleased not to face a bowl of cereal again, the same scrambled eggs, the same heel of toast, the breakfast monotony of a life spent schooling and working and living at home. We have to labor to find beauty and pleasure a...
